Google has officially released the “mobile friendly update” algorithm on April 21st 2015 – here is what you need to know.

From now on, websites that are not mobile friendly will find themselves losing rank in Google’s mobile search results.

“We’re boosting the ranking of mobile-friendly pages on mobile search results,” says Google.

This means that if your competitors’ websites are mobile-friendly and your website is not, your competitors will always appear above you in search results.

Google first announced the update back in February, which is unprecedented for Google to pre-announce major algorithm changes, but Google wanted to give webmasters sufficient time to make their web sites mobile friendly.

FYI: This update will impact only mobile searchers and it will give a ranking boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results only (smartphones only, not tablets). It will not impact desktop searches and desktop rankings.

How can I tell if my site is mobile friendly?

The only way to know if your site is mobile friendly (in Google’s eyes)  is to see if your site passes Googles mobile friendly test. Using the mobile friendly testing tool will show if you pass the test, but Google may still need some time to update their index to pick up on the fact that your web pages are mobile friendly.

Remember, not all your pages need to be mobile friendly.  The mobile friendly algorithm is on a page by page basis. So even if only some of your web pages are not mobile friendly, some come benefit from this algorithm.

What can I do to make my site mobile friendly?
